“Maggots and Murder!” was the title of Professor Richard Zack’s presentation which took place, intentionally or not, right after lunch. It was not the most appetizing presentation to sit through, but none-the-less it was highly entertaining.
Professor Zack, a graduate faculty member at WSU, enthralled his audience of squeamish seventh graders with CSI style imagery, facts, and stories of his experiences with forensic entomology (the study of insects in relation to criminal investigations).
Maggots and Murder wasn’t the only treat the students got at WSU, they also received exceptional care from an accommodating group of WSU student leaders.

Each college student took a group of our middle schoolers on a personalized tour of the campus, gave the kids their own WSU stick-on tattoos, played WSU bingo with them, and set up a question & answer panel providing the kids with a firsthand opportunity to ask any questions they had about WSU or college in general .
Despite all the great brain stimulating activities and specialized care from their WSU student leaders, many kids still said their favorite part of the trip was running as fast as they could over the cushy asphalt of the Cougar stadium, enjoying the all-they-could-eat free lunch, and/or indulging in WSU’s very own Ferdinand’s Ice Cream Shop “Grabber” ice cream sandwiches made with delicious cookie dough ice cream sandwiched between two large, home style cookies.
There was a little something for everyone!
