Red, purple, orange, black, blue—an array of collegiate colors dappled the grounds and adorned the halls of Pioneer Middle School in celebration of GEAR UP's College Spirit Day festivities.
Students and teachers alike proudly dressed in colors and paraphernalia from their colleges elect. Many colors appeared on College Spirit Day representing colleges from coast to coast, but two colors in particular stood out as the obvious favorites: crimson and purple, and nothing can pique a middle school kid's interest in postsecondary education like the taste of good ol' fashioned college rivalry.
I am, of course, talking about the presence of Washington State University Cougar fans and University of Washington Husky fans under the same roof, let alone in the same classroom.
As one could easily predict, the two long time adversaries went head to head in a battle of "one-ups" and "mine's betters."
Ending the day's events, and the built up tension between the Cougs and Huskies, a jesting cat fight broke out when a cohort of Cougar fans infiltrated the classroom of Pioneer teacher, UW alumni, and overt Husky fan, Chris Plucker. The loyal Cougs wished no harm on the shameless Husky, all they wanted to do was leave Mr. Plucker a special gift: a giant, inflatable, WSU t-shirt wearing cougar and a sign saying, "You've been Coug'd!"
Mr. Plucker laughed off the "insult," and sent an all staff email giving props to the perpetrators. "After all," he said, "I did make my classes listen to me sing the [UW] fight song all class period, so I guess I had it coming."
